Digital Pianos are modern day pianos which offer many advantages over traditional acoustic pianos. Digital Pianos do not need tuning as the sounds are recorded and stored digitally to ensure this doesn't happen. They are a lot lighter than traditional acoustic pianos, typically less than half the weight. You have the option to play silently as you can you can use them with headphones, so this would work well if you live in an apartment. Most digital pianos cost less than acoustic pianos and they are relatively low maintenance. Many models can be connected to your computer so you can record yourself playing while some models come with a built in disk drive.

Digital Pianos have 76 or 88 keys. The stage pianos are portable pianos so handy if you need to play your music away from your home where as the home pianos usually come with stands and closely resemble traditional pianos. You may also want to take the style of stand into consideration when making a choice.

If you're looking for the closest feel to an acoustic piano when you play the keys, then look for something with hammer action as this simulates the feeling the best by emulating the movement and weight of the hammers used in traditional pianos. People with weaker fingers or beginners may prefer a nonweighted keyboard. Some digital pianos come with an adjustable touch which means that you can adjust the settings so that if you play the piano lightly it can sound as though you're playing harder.

Polyphony is the number of notes that an instrument can play simultaneously and is usually described as voices or notes. Most digital pianos come with many different sounds, so you can imitate different instruments.

The more you spend on a digital piano then the closer it will imitate a traditional acoustic piano. Popular manufacturers include Yamaha, Roland, Casio, Korg and Kurzweil.
